Resource Volunteer Application
June 2021 - Currently. not accepting new applications
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! Resource volunteers serve a vital role in ensuring that our database is current and up to date. With the largest LGBTQ resource database in the country with over 17,000 resources for cities and towns across the US and Canada, we need to make sure that they are all as up to date as possible. Our hotline and online chat peer support volunteers talk with people from all over who often are in need of direct assistance and local support. Additionally our database is available online to the public at www.LGBTNearMe.org and is used by other mental health organizations in their service to the community. The database is not static, like many others that can be found online, but live and dynamic because of resource volunteers who are constantly updating, removing outdated resources and seeking out new ones as our community grows and change. As a Resource Volunteer, you will play an incredibly important role in maintaining the integrity of the resources we provide to the LGBTQ community every day. Much of our updating will be online and you’ll need to use your internet “know how” to find a resource’s current contact information. You’ll also be keeping your eyes out for new resources to add to the database. This is a volunteer position that isn’t for everyone, it requires a lot of detective work, but it can also be very rewarding. Being a Resource Volunteer you will get to see the hundreds of types of organizations that exist throughout the country. You will have a unique first hand view of the LGBTQ community most people never see, by exploring it though the resource side. We get hundreds of calls and chats a week, and the work you will be doing will directly help those in need, many who are first time callers and just beginning on their personal journey of discovery. |
Requirements for a Resource Volunteer: -Because some of the resources in our database are adult in nature, Resource volunteers must be 18 years old or older. -Volunteers must understand that the work we do on our phones and chats are anonymous and confidential, they can never repeat anything they may over hear if volunteering in office. -Volunteers must have access to the internet and Google Chrome as a browser if volunteering remotely. -Must have basic internet search skills to base training on. -Although, Resource volunteers have a greater flexibility when they take their shifts than our peer support volunteers, we do require 6-8 hours of volunteering a month. Generally they are split into 2 hour shifts a week. We ask for a time commitment of at least six months after completing training. Resource Volunteers will need to complete the application below. If you are selected, an office staff will contact you to set up an interview and answer questions you may have. Training, through screen share and phone call will be provided if selected as a volunteer.. We realize there are many volunteering opportunities out there and we want to thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! Please fill out the application form below and we will get in touch with you shortly. Our goal is to aid the LGBTQ and questioning community, but that does not mean you have to be part of the LGBTQ community to volunteer as a Resource Volunteer. We welcome and encourage our straight allies to apply as well! (contact information in application form will only be used for correspondence and will not be shared with any third parties) Should you have any troubles filling out the application please contact tatiana@lgbthotline.org directly. |
