The LGBT National Help Center is a hub of support for the LGBTQ community. Through our services we provide vital care and support for the LGBTQ community nation wide. We provide three national hotlines, online one to one, and group support and email support programs. In addition, we maintain the largest LGBTQ resource database in the country of over 17,000 resources that can provide additional connections to the community. Our Information Detectives are a vital part of our organization. Our database and online resources are constantly being updated to provide the most up to date information available to our peer support volunteers and to the public. Working with our office staff, Information Detectives use their internet sleuthing powers along with making direct calls when needed to ensure that the information we have is still correct. Additionally our Info Detectives seek out new community connections to continue to grow the database as the LGBTQ community grows and changes. Info Detectives also use their research skills to help our training and media staff to find new books, podcasts, music and videos that can be used on our social media and to help in our training programs for new peer support volunteers. Our hotline and online chat peer support volunteers talk with people from all over who often are in need of direct assistance and local support. Additionally our database is available online to the public at www.LGBTNearMe.org and is used by other mental health organizations in their service to the community. As a Resource Volunteer, you will play an incredibly important role in maintaining the integrity of the resources we provide to the LGBTQ community every day. Much of our updating will be online and you’ll need to use your internet “know how” to find a resource’s current contact information. You’ll also be keeping your eyes out for new resources to add to the database. This is a volunteer position that isn’t for everyone, it requires a lot of detective work, but it can also be very rewarding. Being a Resource Volunteer you will get to see the hundreds of types of organizations that exist throughout the country. You will have a unique first hand view of the LGBTQ community most people never see, by exploring it though the resource side. We get hundreds of calls and chats a week, and the work you will be doing will directly help those in need, many who are first time callers and just beginning on their personal journey of discovery. |
